Centralia High School

Centralia, Illinois

Centralia High School in Centralia, IL, is distinctive because the architect realized in the early stages of the project that the school board's desire to use traditional building materials such as brick and stone cladding could not be accomplished within the budget without sacrificing the scope. The decision to utilize Gate's Architectural Precast High Performance Wall System was the solution to maintaining the design goals and the budget.

design assistance

Gate Precast worked with the design team to design a solution at an affordable price with superior thermal qualities that will continue to pay for years to come. Structural steel prices were very unstable at the time of construction and there was a shortage of masonry contractors in the area. A brick-inlay precast concretefaçade applied to a load-bearing wall panel drastically reduced the amount of structural steel and clay brick originally required for the project.

Precast Concrete Advantages

The decision to utilize architectural precast on this project allowed the architect to meet the design goals and maintain the budget.

Aesthetics: Architectural precast offered a medium to carve and shape an unlimited amount of detail into the design of the panels enabling the creation of a design that captured detailing from architecture of years past.

Economy: Reduction of brick, and Structural Steel

Accelerated Schedule: Once the first panel was erected, the entire 256,000 square foot building’s entire perimeter was in place in only a few months.

Durable Finished Interior Walls: A steel troweled finish was applied to the interior of the precast panel system. The wall system can stand up to the abuse that a high school building experiences.

Integrated Electrical Systems: With cooperation from the design team and contractors, the electrical conduit, piping, penetrations and devices were incorporated into the panels during fabrication which eliminated the need for unsightly surface mounted materials.

The Proof:

Results from Post Occupancy Thermal Imaging of Centralia High School validates the energy efficiency of the precast wall system.

From the Architect:

"This project would not have had the success it has had without the knowledge and experience of the Gate Precast staff. Their willingness to assist in the design development and construction document stages was absolutely priceless. The support from the sales, architectural and senior administrative staff to the expertise of the staff at the fabrication facilities was greatly appreciated and essential as well."

"We found that building a relationship with a qualified architectural precast panel system manufacturer is essential as well as bringing their knowledge and experience to the team early on in the schematic design phase. This improves the design team’s understanding of the master mold concept, and reduces potential construction, coordination and erection issues. Ultimately, all of these result in cost savings to a project."
